If I had to choose just one warm wooly accessory to wear this winter, I would, hands down (pun intended) choose a pair of cozy mittens. The way I see it is if my hands are warm, I can conquer anything (plus, if my ears are cold I can always cover them up with my mittens!)
In this post I cover some of the most popular mitten-related categories:
- Free Mitten Knitting Patterns
- Fingerless Mittens Knitting Patterns
- Free Baby Mittens Knitting Patterns
- Easy Mitten Knitting Patterns
Thank you so much for being here. Happy Mitten Knittin’!
Free Mitten Knitting Patterns
Beehive Mittens
The FREE Beehive Mittens by Emily Kintigh are stunningly textured and the stitch patterns Emily uses will produce a thick and cozy fabric, just perfect for fall or winter walks. The mittens are knit in the round from the bottom (cuff) up with stitches held for the thumb.
The Beehive Mittens are classified as an Intermediate pattern and will fit a hand circumference between 7 and 9 inches. The pattern includes a gusset chart to help you visualize the increases and each size of mitten includes a clear set of instructions.
Emily Kintigh designed the Beehive Mittens using Knit Picks Twill, a worsted weight merino yarn in the “gold rush” colorway. Wanna try your hand at something a little more colorful? Check out Muse Hand Painted in 26 breathtaking colorways.
For more textured mittens (and a matching hat!) check out Emily’s other FREE Mitten Knitting Pattern, the Ultra Cozy Hat and Mittens. Up for a little embroidery? Check out Instant Mittens by Mary Jane Mucklestone who walks you through the mitten pattern and then details how she embroidered the heart motif!

Traipse Mittens
The FREE Traipse Mittens by Emily Ringelman are a cable knitter’s dream! There are 3 cables running the length of the hand and the instructions are both written and charted!
The Traipse Mittens have a 7″ finished palm circumference × 10″ total length and they are meant to be worn with no ease at your palm.
Emily designed the Traipse Mittens using Knit Picks Twill in the Horchata Heather (27926) colorway. To play it safe, Emily recommends that you purchase 2 hanks, and you could use the leftovers to knit the Free Traipse Hat (add an extra skein if you want to add a pom pom!)
Liliiflora Mittens
These Liliiflora Mittens by Joyce Fassbender are so gorgeous that it’s hard to believe that the pattern is FREE! The Liliiflora Mittens are knit in stranded colorwork from the cuff up and you will knit the cuff and body of the mitten while holding the thumb stitches to be completed last.
Joyce Fassbender is a seasoned and very talented designer. She has carefully charted this gorgeous pattern to ensure your knitting success, but if you’re like me and have trouble tracking your colorwork rows, I recommend using the Premium Knitting Chart Keeper by Knit Picks. It keeps me on track and can easily be shut and stored like a book in my knitting basket in between fiber sessions!
Chart Keeper
Joyce designed the STUNNING Liliiflora Mittens using a strand of Chroma Fingering and Stroll Fingering in “black” as her contrast color. There are over 20 Chroma Fingering colorways to choose from and the one Joyce used has been discontinued. Check out the “Tiki”(28041) colorway for a close substitute.
Prefer a more traditional colorwork look? Ditch the gradient yarn and opt for 2 solid colorways.

North Star Colourwork Mittens in Novita
by Novita
When I dream about Classic Colorwork Mittens, the motif on the North Star Colourwork Mittens often comes to mind. This timeless pattern has been given new life by Novita with a gradient yarn and a pop of white in contrast.
The North Star Colourwork Mittens can be knit in 2 sizes: Women and Men. I’ve worked out that the Women’s size measures about 8 inches in circumference and the men’s about 8.75 inches in circumference (assuming you meet gauge).
As of this post being published, very few colorways in the recommended yarn are currently available on LoveCrafts. I love Lion Brand Landscapes in the “Coral Reef” colorway and Malabrigo Rios in the “Diana” colorway, but there are dozens of others to choose from. Click on the yarns below to see them all!
Pair with Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in “Fisherman” (098) or Malabrigo Worsted in “Natural” (063):
For more classic colorwork consider the Karelia Mittens and Knitted Lapland Mittens, both by Novita:
Fingerless Mittens Knitting Patterns
Ah, the fingerless mitt. Such a brilliant way to keep your hands cozy and still get things done! I’ve even heard from knitters who wear their fingerless mitts indoors to keep the chill from the air conditioning off of their hands. Genius!
I’ve found 10 FREE Fingerless Mittens Knitting Patterns and a few additional surprises for you to discover along the way! Enjoy!
Heart Hands
The FREE Heart Hands Pattern by the Editors at Craftsy is a quick knit that you can complete in a weekend (or less). The pattern is knit flat using a combination of knit and purl stitches and you will seam your finished mitts using mattress stitch.
The Heart Hands Pattern directs you to crochet a small heart to attach to your finished mittens. I’ve found these tutorials and a pattern to help you either knit or crochet a heart:
Craftsy recommends 1 hank of Cloudborn Highland Superwash Worsted Yarn and some scrap yarn to complete the heart. I love Malabrigo Worsted in the colorways “Natural” and “Fucsia”:
