Is there anything cozier than a knitted blanket? This post is all about the most popular blanket squares knitting pattern this year…but we couldn’t stop at just one!
Join us as we list the 10 most popular blanket squares knitting patterns of 2021!
1. Hue Shift Afghan
With over 5,000 projects on Ravelry and raving reviews, it is no surprise that the Hue Shift Afghan by Kerin Dimeler-Laurence is the Most Popular Blanket Squares Pattern of 2021. Its design is colorful, cozy, and in one word: sublime.
The Hue Shift Afghan uses 11 colors and is knit in 4 larger pieces which you then seam together. You knit each of the 4 larger pieces beginning at the corner and then construct them using mitered squares.
The Hue Shift Afghan is knit in simple garter stitch (all knit rows), and Kerin Dimeler-Laurence guides us carefully through the steps of creating a mitered square. The result is breathtaking!
Purchase your Hue Shift Afghan pattern here or choose a Knit Picks Hue Shift Afghan Kit. With 4 palettes to choose from, you’re sure to find one you just adore.
Do you have a different palette in mind? Or do you want to knit with fewer (or dare we say MORE) colors? Knit Picks has you covered with their incredible “Kit Builder” option. Scroll down the bottom of this page and create the customized version of the Hue Shift Afghan.
2. Lizard Ridge
by Laura Aylor
Calling all Noro lovers! The Lizard Ridge blanket is an INGENIUS use of Noro Kureyon’s long, beautiful color runs and is another very popular blanket squares knitting pattern on Ravelry this year.
The Lizard Ridge blanket can either be knit in one piece, or in individual squares. The squares are then seamed together using mattress stitch and an edging is applied.
Using just under 1 skein of yarn per square, Laura recommends using 21 skeins for the 24 square blanket, with the remaining 3 squares made up of leftovers.

4. Vivid
by tincanknits
The photos of Vivid by Tin Can Knits take our breath away. The lace floral detail on each square creates a more delicate version of the traditional knitted blanket.
According the Tin Can Knits, the pattern can be knit in any weight of yarn. Each square will measure approximately 7.5 (8, 9) inches square for sock (DK, worsted / aran) weight yarns, and you can decide how many squares to make based on the size of blanket you’d like.
The Vivid blanket pattern can be purchased HERE on LoveCrafts You can also buy this pattern as a part of Handmade in the UK – an e-book of 10 pretty lace designs inspired by the historic cities and picturesque landscapes of the United Kingdom.
5. memory blanket
Our next blanket square knitting pattern on the list is a second memory blanket, designed by Georgie Nicolson. Georgie provides us with a clear how-to pattern to create this seamless, modular blanket.
With clear photographs and detailed instructions, Georgie’s is a great pattern to consider if you’re new to mitered squares or are struggling to master the technique.
In the memory blanket pattern, each square measures approximately 3½ x 3½ inches/ 9 X 9 cms. And while you can make your blanket any size you like, Georgie points out that as the blanket grows bigger the additional weight will stretch the blanket and the squares will be bigger.
