I’m not sure there is any garment more satisfying to knit than the sock! That small circle of zen that goes round and round, changing course every few inches and resulting in the coziest knit you’ll ever wear – what’s not to love?
I have heard from knitters who have knit themselves enough pairs socks that they never need to wear store bought socks again. They are my heroes and I am endeavoring to do the same, one pair at a time!

Popular Free Sock Knitting Patterns
First Harvest Socks
The First Harvest Socks by Knit Picks Design Team feature rows of wheat and orchard trees that remind us of a bountiful autumn harvest. The socks are knit toe up and are well suited to an intermediate knitter.
The First Harvest Socks are textured with some cablework and all of the pattern stitches are charted. They are sized to fit a woman’s medium foot.
The First Harvest Socks are designed for Hawthorne Fingering Multi (80% Fine Superwash Highland Wool, 20% Polyamide (Nylon)). The colorway in the photo is called “Rose City”. I also love the colorways “Hayden” and “Burlingame”:

Cute Hearts Socks
The Cute Hearts Socks by Barbara Nalewko is the most popular free sock knitting pattern on LoveCrafts.com. The socks are knit from the toe up and feature a double stranded colorwork pattern with an afterthought heel.
Barbara Nalewko has designed the socks to fit 4 different sizes of foot. You’ll need fingering weight sock yarn in 3 different colors to complete the colorwork pattern. To achieve similar colors to Barbara try MillaMia Naturally Soft Sock in “Linen”, “Falu Red” and “Alligator”and there are many more colors to choose from too!
Wildflowers Socks
The Wildflowers Socks by Knit Picks Design Team are delightfully designed and feature twists and yarn overs to create a pattern similar to that of a growing garden. You will knit them from the toe up and the pattern is best suited to an intermediate knitter.
The Wildflowers Socks feature a rolled cuff and all pattern stitches have been charted for your convenience. They are knit from Hawthorne Fingering Multi (80% Fine Superwash Highland Wool, 20% Polyamide (Nylon)), but unfortunately the colorway used in the pattern has been discontinued. The colorway Burlingame is a great substitute and I also love the colorways Brooklyn and Cathedral:

Got Needles?
Your choice of sock knitting needles is a personal one and really comes down to which method you enjoy best. You can knit on 2 circular needles, 1 long circular needle, double pointed needles or a small circular needle.
My advice is to try them all and decide for yourself! Here are a few popular sock needle sets for you to check out:
Bed Socks Knitting Patterns
Lace Bed Socks in Plymouth Yarn
The Lace Bed Socks in Plymouth Yarn Pattern by Plymouth Yarn are as thick and squishy as they are beautiful. Knit with worsted weight yarn, they’ll knit up quickly and your feet will be cozy in no time!
The lace pattern on the Lace Bed Socks is a simple one and although the pattern is brief, it does include some very helpful advice about how to complete each of the pattern stitches.
The Lace Bed Socks are designed using Plymouth Arequipa Worsted, which is a Superwash Merino Wool and Silk blend. I also love Plymouth Yarn’s Worsted Merino Superwash (100% Superwash Merino) in “Bubblegum” and “Cornflower”.

Slipper Sock Knitting Patterns
Cosy Slipper Socks
by Debbie Bliss
Debbie Bliss has been one of my favorite knitwear designers for as long as I can remember. Her baby and toddler knitting patterns have always been my go-to patterns when a friend or family member has a baby, but I’ll confess, I’ve never actually knit one of her patterns designed for adults. When I saw these Cosy Slipper Socks in Cashmerino Chunky Yarn I instantly knew that that all of that was about to change.
The Cosy Slipper Socks knit up quickly in Cashmerino Chunky Yarn (55% Wool 33% Acrylic 12% Cashmere) on 6mm and 5.5mm knitting needles. The instructions for the right and left foot are different when you begin to shape the instep and toe, which will help you achieve a more comfortable fit.
Debbie Bliss’ Cozy Slipper Socks are knit flat and then seamed and you can choose to knit them in 2 sizes: Women’s 5-6US and 7-8US (4-5 and 6-7UK). Debbie recommends the colorways “Pearl” and “Rose” to complete these slipper socks. I also love the combination of “Sky” and “Denim”:

Busy Bees Socks
It doesn’t get any sweeter than the Busy Bee Socks by Knit Picks Design Team. These socks are designed with a cable from the foot up to the cuff to resemble worker bees in the honeycomb. The socks also feature a cuff with bees buzzing happily – if you’re a bee lover you HAVE to knit these socks!
The Busy Bee Socks are knit toe up. The honeycomb and cuff bees patterns are charted and the socks are designed for a foot size of 8.5US (but of course you can always adjust the foot length to whatever you need).
They’re knit from Knit Picks Hawthorne Kettle Yarn (80% Superwash Fine Highland Wool, 20% Polyamide Nylon) in the “Compass” colorway. I also love the “Daphne” colorway:
